ALL ABOUT OIL CLEANSING (Double Cleansing)

Oil cleansing

WHAT IS IT?

Oil cleansing is a skin cleansing method which involves oil-based cleansers. The oil bonds to the oils and dirt on your skin and helps remove makeup, surface debris, and excess oil from the skin.

WHY IT WORKS?

Based on the chemical principle “like dissolves like”, oils will dissolve substances that have similar chemical structures ie sebum or greasy make-up.

BENEFITS OF OIL CLEANSING?

  • Won’t strip and dry out the skin and will help lock in hydration
  • Removes oil-based & waterproof make-up more efficiently (“like dissolves like”)
  • Can help dissolve gunk in your pores

IS IT SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE?

Oil Cleansing is suitable for all ages and all skin types – Sensitive, Dry, Combination, Acne-prone skin and even oily skin! It is a myth that oil cleansing will make your skin oilier. It actually helps balance your skin’s oil production!

However, just because it is suitable for all skin types, it doesn’t mean it will work for everyone. Depending on the oil being used and your skin type, some oils could lead to increased breakouts and irritation. We always recommend doing a patch test first, or just use oil on a small area of your face and observe your skin’s reaction after a few weeks. If you notice an increase in breakouts,, you may need to gently cleanse afterwards, use a different oil, or stop oil cleansing altogether.

HOW DO I OIL CLEANSE?

Get some oil (suggestions below)

Pour it into your hand & rub it between your palms

Gentry rub it on your face for 60 seconds

Wipe it off with a warm towel

Follow up with your regular cleanser

Done!

WHAT OILS DO I USE?

Jojoba oil is actually one of the best cleansing oils because its chemical structure is closest to the sebum that our skin naturally produces. It’s also non-allergenic, which means it’s suitable for those even with very sensitive skin.

Other alternatives:

  • Grapeseed oil
  • Argan oil

Oils to avoid:

There are some oils that may not be suitable for everyone. It really all depends on your skin type. In general, we recommend choosing the safer options above and avoid any unwanted skin reactions.

  • Coconut – may clog pores
  • Castor – acts as an astringent cleaner and can cause skin drying
  • Avocado – may clog pores
  • Cocoa butter – may clog pores

One of the most important things is to buy high-quality oils and cleansers without added scents or dyes! Give it a try and remember just because it works for somebody else, it may not work for you, and that is completely fine!
